What the Frell Wednesday

Last Sunday Liz, Jeff, Lotte, and myself played Honey Heist (I was a washed up grizzly bear with a flat cap named Walter Matthau). I accidentally killed Jerry Seinfeld. It was glorious.

Jeff and I are in the very stressful process of house hunting for the second time (hopefully last time unless we, like, move out of the state or country). Our house is worth 10k more than we thought it was but it's pretty much all going back into the house, so.

Saturday I did a movie night with a group of friends and we rouletted to watch The Mummy Returns. Where The Mummy was better than I remembered, The Mummy Returns was worse. I'm curious about how many people my age have fond memories and haven't gone back to actually watch it because (while fun!) it's...not good! I don't think I really need to elaborate. I mean, people will either watch it or not? It's a matter of taste I think!

I started Chernobyl, which I saw someone most accurately describe as "the horror of statism". YIKES. It is deeply, and appropriately, horrific and well worth a watch if you can stomach that sort of show.

On Farscape, we finally got to The Way Things Weren't. I cried like a baby (particularly during the scene where Aeryn and Pilot reconnected UGH). But I've been doing that a lot since dad passed away--I even cried during some of the worst episodes of Buffy season 6, which Jeff's been slowly having me watch. Granted Willow and Buffy talking through Buffy's depression does inspire some tears after The Mess That Was The Magicians.

And speaking of the The Magicians! I posted a Fen/Margo fic I'm pretty happy with and now I kind of want to write an Eliot and Alice friendship fic in the same verse (namely: 'Quentin wants to garden but he's patently bad at it, so Eliot helps but he's mostly a farm guy, so Alice helps, leaving Eliot and Alice gardening together'). I'm putting it on the back burner for now because I really need to focus on my Just Married Exchange Fic, my Black Sails stuff and life.

Time to work on one of those right now! I'll figure out which when I've closed this tab.

comments

Reading (and Watching!) Wednesday

Jeff is sick (or plagued by allergies or simply exposed to the sun too long), the poor scratchy-throated dear. I was sick before the beach, our dog went to the beach with an ear infection, so I suppose it was meant to be his turn. Still, despite his trials, Ludo was very happy to go out on the sand:

And Jeff felt well enough to start digging into season 2 of Farscape, which housed one of the first scenes to get a real "WHOA!" out of him, to my utter delight (Nilaam and D'argo's foreplay in S02E02). He's really enjoying the character-driven episodes and the 'Something's wrong with Crichton' arc, and Aeryn remains his favorite character (for good reason). We also finally started in on Schitt's Creek (like every other grieving gay after The Magician's finale).

While I was at the beach I attempted to read The Great Starship Race by Diane Carey

I was expecting something light and hilarious and it was more...too serious for what it should have been. I got about halfway through before I gave up entirely. The opening that sets up the stories with the Romulans was interesting, but the moment I got to the Federation and the race I set myself to be biased against it, which I didn't expect. There's a woman, early on in the story, Nancy Ransom (with the typical ex-Starfleet-Cadet-maybe-ex-flame-of-Kirk's-maybe-just-jealous backstory), the lone female captain in the crowd (or if she wasn't they did a poor job showing otherwise) who joins the side of the detractors against Kirk. There are those against the Federation in general; they have faster ships, better tech, etc. Kirk makes a grand speech and they're off to the races. It's all standard stuff, delivered in the tone that you're meant to believe Kirk and co. are a bit in the right with a lesson to learn along the way. But Ransom is talked down to in a way none of the men are and it's just so out of place in this universe of THE FUTURE. This book was written in 1993, so I think it speaks more to the idea that a woman writing about an equal society in theory still can't wrap her head around the practical applications therein.

And I've been able to slug through books like this before, but its biggest sin is it's boring. I think I was expecting more 'Kirk leads Spock and Bones gleefully into danger' so my apologies to Diane Carey that this just didn't do it for me.

I'm currently digging through Kingsman fic by zebraljb and she has a real talent for dialogue. I also need to rec (again) Bal's fantastic True Detective fic, The Circle Loom. Whether the show was one that interested you or not, it's a fascinating take on the "lovers drawn together through time travel" trope and weaves back and forth between warm intimacy and the terror of being known (to yourself and others).

I posted to my Black Sails AU after an 11 month hiatus so time to make myself write more (wish me luck).

comments

Introduction

Well I just wrote the entirety of this introduction piece only to see it deleted when I tried to preview it so...let's try this again, I guess.

My name is Brittany (call me Britta or Brittany), I'm 30 years old, She/Her. I've been reading fanfiction for around 20 years, starting with video games and anime, probably Final Fantasy but more avidly Kingdom Hearts and Dragonball Z, then moving into Harry Potter when I was thirteen or so and discovered the amazing amount of tailored fanfiction sites for it. I lurked in the Brokeback Mountain and TBBT fandoms in late high school/early college so some of you know me from there. Before Feoplepeel I went by the usernames:

Sable Bou

Heulyn

Currently I'm writing for Scrubs and Black Sails and reading for whatever comes across my screen and grabs my attention. I also consider myself an archivist for whatever fandom I've been in, and frequent the fic finder communities in case I have copies of lost or deleted works.
I really can't go into the plethora of characters I love and ships I ship again (that took Too Long the first time). Let's just say it was A Lot and we probably crossover on something in some fandom and disagree elsewhere and that, too, is fine. I'm pretty easy to please. I can be easily compelled to like characters or ships with a good enough fic/storyline.

I am FeoplePeel everywhere including Ao3 and Tumblr, so feel free to reach out wherever you see me! The only exception to this is Wattpad--I DO NOT have a Wattpad, so if you see any of my fic there, I'd appreciate you letting me know.

-Britta

comments
